From the Phantom SoapBox blog. $1: Vegans are skinny, weak and sickly.
In (another) new study, vegans do not come out well.
Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.
...
"Vegetarians were twice as likely to have allergies, a 50 percent increase in heart attacks and a 50 percent increase in incidences of cancer.
The cross-sectional study from Austrian Health Interview Survey data and published in PLos One examined participants dietary habits, demographic characteristics and general lifestyle differences.
The most significant dietary habit difference between meat-eaters and vegetarians concerned their BMI and alcohol consumption – with both being higher for those who consume meat."
Translation: Lower BMI = skinny, poorer quality of life and increased need for healthcare = weak, 50% increase in heart attacks and cancer = sickly.
In the blurb they didn't mention the other prominent features of veganism: B12 deficiency, really bad breath, rotten teeth and osteopenia. I guess they didn't want to irritate the Green Police. More at LinkAnd here's the study they're talking about. http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchObj ... tation=PDF

God but I hate tofu. Give me beef or give me pork. The worst thing about vegans is their inability to STFU about it. Worst than born agains.

Eat anything and everything in moderation, sticking to one food type will cause health problems. Vary your diet.

Humans are omnivores, meat of some sort is an essential part of our natural diet. Our biology is what it is.
While I understand a veggie only diet is possible, it needs to be carefully managed and supplements of some sort might still be necessary.

If "veggies" need a substitute for protein then it is quite obvious that your body requires it. Veggies wear it like a badge and like the Gluten free fad, use pseudo science and antidotal testaments to justify it. As PluggyRug said.........everything in moderation.

Regina Regina: His NHL career came to end the same time he became a Veggie. He was always a vegetarian, through his entire NHL career. He became a Vegan in 2009. Pretty much dispels the "Vegans are skinny, weak and sickly" stereotype, and that low BMI is somehow a bad thing. Ever watch Olympic Marathons? Ever see the Kenyans who always win? Then there is the fact there are entire websites dedicated to Vegetarianism and bodybuilding . . .

Eat what you like and quit telling others what they should eat. People do well on all sorts of diets.

There's no doubt someone who is a Veggie can be as big as they like, but they will need to have a protein replacement.

Naw, full vegans don't eat anything that was alive, or the products from. Meat, fish, dairy, eggs, only plants. ( Never mind the fact that plants were alive, and they are still killing stuff. You know they really get uncomfortable when you being that up in conversation. )
