Benoit Benoit: ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: $1: Required Qualifications: • Aboriginal Certificate Program Graduate • Early Childhood Certificate Program • Bachelor of Education and Professional Teaching Certificate • Eligible for Nunavut Teacher Certificate My wife was perusing one of the teacher recruitment sites and noticed several jobs had this listed. Would it be acceptable to state, in an adverisement, that only whites of European ancestry need apply for this teaching position, since the school is located in a predominantly white area and the students are predominantly white? a 50 cents polemic.
The tree smells of abject falure.

Personally I think the person should get the job based on skill not on gender or race, culture. Unfortunately when we still have Employers with gender, racial, cultural bias this doesn't work. Reality sucks wear a helmet.

Benoit Benoit: dino_bobba_renno dino_bobba_renno: Brenda Brenda: I thought you'd left? Jeesh, if you lie about that, what else are you lieing about? No need to get after her Brenda, she'll have to debate with Beniot, that will be punishment enough. I'm indeed racy.
I'm curious Benoit. If you were lost in the woods and could hear a river to your right that you knew if you followed it would eventually take you out of the woods; to your left is extremely dense woods. Would you go left in hopes you would find the three little bears house?

Sadly, it's the never-ending cycle of being offended. One group is disadvantaged, so parts of society want to pull them up by focusing on them. Then, the opposite group complains that they are being disadvantaged.
The whiny "now I'm being disadvantaged!" argument only works if we were in a perfect world where no discrimination exists. Instead, we're in a somewhat patchy situation, getting better, still better than most countries, but still with a lot of work to do. Aboriginals (and other minorities), still, in fact, face discrimination (What!?!?). All you have to do for proof is look around at some of the posts on this forum. To combat this, some will try to focus on that community and offer jobs to them specifically to pull them up, like this one. And then the cycle continues as they are accused of being racists.
A not-so-real solution is to magically become a place where everyone is considered for a place or position based on merit and nothing else and all discrimination has disappeared, by tomorrow. Unfortunately, that won't happen.
The only real solution is to try and pull above the cycle and examine the situation as mature people in an intelligent fashion. But how often do you think that will happen?

Yeah come here to the USA and see how bad it is.

To evaluate affirmative action you need a theory of justice. John Rawls' theory is the most influencial such theory. Rawls maintains that social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are to be of the greatest benefit to the least-advantaged members of society (the difference principle). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Theory_of_Justice

Others may disagree. My own theory is that systems designed to bring about "fairness" rarely do so. Communism, for example.

I agree with westmanguy.. race or colour or sexuality, gender should not have anything to do with hiring... if you meet the qualifications and can do well in the interview process, it shouldnt matter..point is there is nothing wrong with an employer selecting the most qualified or experienced person.. the concept of competition is a good idea.. problem is some people who pull the racist card cannot compete for what ever reason.. there is no free ride and all those things we named here shouldnt mean a shoe in either...

Again, perhaps for you. Not necessarily for everyone else. I've never heard of it, but if it proposes a quota system and barring people from jobs based on race or gender, I doubt it's that influential, since a good part of teh population (the right) do not subscribe to such measures.

Your laws and our laws are little bit different, I guess. Cities, and reserves are totally 2 different jurisdictions. You make urs, we make ours. There is lotta whites and other races that have been hired in reserves, you just dont want to see that. We were at this land way before you, so just be happy with, that you are here.
