Thats why they relied on the Venetians, who conquered it 300 years before to defend it? The population at the time was around 100,000 I think. Not exactly the pinnicle of Christianity anymore I would say. At its height it was over 1 million. I wonder what happened?

Oh no Im not denying they didnt give it their all in fact I am amazed they survived long enough to an enemy 5 times their number. If fact, I think there was a problem with the chain of command or something, and Mehemed took advantage of that and made one last siege and there you go. What I am wondering is why the Christians didnt bolster the population more. England and France had the 100 years war right? What the hell were Germany and the rest of Europe doing?

The Hussites, Swiss, and Poles were all busy invading Germany, Bohemia, Austria and the Teutonic Kingdoms. Europe was all tied up- the Black Death didn't help either.
