"Several hundred protesters gathered outside Toronto city hall bellowed chants, held placards and scratched out messages using sticks of chalk Saturday as they made their case for Mayor Rob Ford to resign in the wake of an alleged drug video scandal."

8O massive turnout!

This photograph was taken from another angle.

Not exactly a packed square but a decent-sized crowd, I suppose.

I think though, both lefties and righties don't like crackheads running their city.

Some Torontonians would have loved to have the former drug addict, high school dropout named George Smitherman to run the City after he butchered his file at the Provincial level.

It's not the crack that's the problem, it's the politics. It's ok to do crack and be an uneducated moron...if you're a Liberal.

Absolutely!

Being away from the situation as you are, you haven't seen that people and certain media outlets haven't been happy with Ford since day 1. It doesn't have to do with actual performance, it comes down to his politics and his image.

Is the City falling apart? Is the City in a bad financial situation? Is the Mayor at war with labour groups? Is the City facing tax increases? Is the City facing massive cuts to services?

The answer to all of the above is "No".

The issue here is that the mayor doesn't meet the snobby standard of some of the lefties in Toronto because of his image and his politics. Results and reality be damned.

That has zero to do with your assertion.

Wouldn't disagree that Ford has been a target for the self declared progressives(they're the only ones who see themselves as being progressive.....progressing towards what, I'm not sure) since they lost control of Toronto, but he hasn't helped his self image either. The mayor and his office has been turned into a side show by both Ford and the media both. What's next Ford is a klansman or practises human sacrifice? This makes Toronto as a whole look juvenile

Has he gotten bad press... sure he has. Is the Star out to get him... maybe, but the other papers don't seem to have a problem printing the stories.

You have to admit though that Ford has been handing them material to print on a silver platter.

Sure it does. You haven't heard the cries from the left looking to bring back Smitherman to run again (or Chow) who was a former drug user, high school dropout and one that screwed Ontario. He looks pretty in a suit and has a good image. His drug use and results don't matter because he fits the image of what the lefty elites in the city want to see.

Losing that many staffers within the space of a week. especially key members like a chief of staff and communications secretary, is a massive blow to anyone and can't be shrugged off as unimportant. Those kinds of things happening can't be blamed by the ideologues and partisans as being all the fault of the bigoted and hostile local press.

What's the circulation of the Toronto Star anyway? I highly doubt they're more influential than any other paper now is here in the dying days of print media.

Horseshit. Anybody can cut taxes. It doesn't take any special skills. You make it sound like only Rob Ford can do it. You conservatives can still elect a conservative mayor without him/her being the douchebag shit-show that is Rob Ford. It does, however speak volumes about conservatives when they have such low standards for their leaders that they'll actually defend the behaviour that Ford has displayed over the past two years.

It's probably done enough to disgrace local conservatism that Toronto'll end up with a dozen years of another David Miller, or even worse if some hardcore flake like that Smitherman guy gets the job, thanks to Ford's incessant buffoonery.

There is all kind of evidence the attacks on Ford are political and partisan though. First of all they all come from the left. Many if not most lately lack hard support of fact, or substance of complaint (he didn't use the right stationary). Often one notices political hypocrisy such as the hard left Premier of Ontario is now threatening to get involved in investigating Rob Ford based on these unsubstantiated allegations, but meanwhile up the road in London Ontario the Mayor (who shares a party allegiance with the Premier) is being investigated for Fraud. No threat of provincial interference there.
